Heart Transplant Surgery

A heart transplant is a life-saving surgical procedure where a diseased or failing heart is replaced with a healthy heart from a deceased donor. This complex operation is typically reserved for individuals with severe heart conditions that cannot be treated effectively with other medical or surgical interventions. Candidates undergo rigorous evaluation to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the procedure of heart transplant. After a successful heart transplant, patients can experience a dramatic improvement in their quality of life, with increased energy and the ability to resume normal activities.

About Heart Transplant

A failing heart is replaced with a healthier donor heart during a heart transplant procedure. People who need a heart transplant are typically those whose conditions haven't improved enough with medication or other procedures.

For a number of reasons, you might need a heart transplant. The most frequent cause is severe heart failure, which is caused by one or both ventricles that aren't working properly. Congenital abnormalities with a single ventricle or cases of irreversible heart failure brought on by long-term valve obstruction or leakage are more likely to result in ventricular failure than other types of congenital heart disease.

Procedure of Heart Transplant

A heart transplant is a complex and life-saving surgical procedure aimed at replacing a failing or damaged heart with a healthy donor heart. It is the final recourse for individuals facing end-stage heart failure when other treatments have proven inadequate.

The process begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the patient. This includes assessing their overall health, identifying the cause of their heart failure, and determining if they are an appropriate candidate for a transplant.

A suitable donor heart is identified from a deceased individual who has chosen to be an organ donor or through a deceased donor program. Once a compatible donor heart is available, a surgical team is dispatched to retrieve it. The organ must be transported quickly, as the viability of the heart is time-sensitive

Post-surgery, the patient is transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) for post-operative monitoring. Vital signs, organ function, and rejection indicators are closely observed. Rehabilitation begins early, including physical therapy and emotional support, to help the patient regain strength and adapt to their new heart.
