About Shirodhara Treatment

Shirodhara is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy where warm oil flows gently onto the forehead's "third eye" point. This targeted stream induces deep relaxation, calming the mind and promoting mental clarity. The experience transcends mere physical touch, offering a meditative state that unravels stress and fosters holistic balance.

There are 3 types of dhara which are stated below:

  • Sneha Dhara: It uses tel or ghee, which is herbal.

  • Ksheer Dhara: It uses milk infused with herbs.

  • Takra Dhara: It uses buttermilk infused with suitable herbs.

Procedure of Shirodhara Treatment

The best time to perform the Shirodhara is early morning or early evening.

Because this is- the time of Vata Doshas.

It can also be referred to as Takradhara, Tailadhara, Kashayadhara, and Jaladhara, depending on whether the liquids are medicated or not. The first step in a Shirodhara therapy is an Abhyangam body massage. Lying on a massage table, the person shuts their eyes and unwinds their body. Shirodhara starts by slowly adding several liters of lukewarm oil. There is an oscillating stream of oil poured onto the forehead.

Shirodhara sessions can last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the patient's needs. Avoid letting the oil get in your ears or eyes. Better outcomes can be achieved with a light head massage before or during Shirodhara. Another method of Shirodhara is to pour water, decoctions, or buttermilk.

  • Shirodhara stimulates the brain by pouring warm oil on the forehead.

  • It stimulates pituitary glands and encourages sleep.

  •  It stimulates vital Points in the head and improves circulation.

  • Vasodilatation of all the channels occurs due to warm oil which improves the flow of blood in the brain.

  • Shirodhara relaxes the mind by reducing stress hormone levels such as adrenaline and noradrenaline.
