Gastric Balloon

A gastric balloon is a non-surgical, temporary weight loss intervention designed to assist individuals in achieving a healthier weight by creating a feeling of fullness. This minimally invasive procedure involves the insertion of a deflated balloon into the stomach, which is then inflated to occupy space, limiting the amount of food the stomach can hold and promoting a sense of satiety.

About Gastric Balloon

For those with a lower body mass index (BMI) who desire to reduce weight without surgery, the gastric balloon is a less invasive weight management method. An endoscope is used to introduce a deflated silicone balloon into the stomach during the surgery. A sterile saline solution is injected into the balloon once it is within the stomach, inflating it and taking up space there. Patients are able to eat smaller quantities and consume less calories as a result of the sense of fullness this causes.

Procedure of Gastric Balloon

The gastric balloon procedure is a non-surgical and temporary weight loss intervention designed to assist individuals in achieving significant weight reduction.

During the procedure, a deflated balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth and esophagus using an endoscope, eliminating the need for surgical incisions.

Once in place, the balloon is filled with a sterile saline solution or gas, expanding to occupy space within the stomach. This creates a sense of fullness, reducing the amount of food a person can comfortably consume and promoting earlier satiety.

The gastric balloon remains in the stomach for a predetermined period, typically ranging from six months to a year, after which it is removed.

This minimally invasive approach is particularly suitable for individuals who may not be eligible for or prefer to avoid more invasive weight loss surgeries.

The procedure is often complemented by dietary and lifestyle modifications to maximize its effectiveness as part of a comprehensive weight management plan.
