The Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw originated from the establishment of the Institute of Congenital Defects of Metabolism and Pediatrics on the premises of the former Pediatric Clinic founded in 1952.
Noteworthy achievements of the Clinic include spearheading the first nationwide screening tests for phenylketonuria in Poland and introducing its treatment in 1964, as well as the nationwide introduction of diagnosis and treatment for galactosemia and hyperphenylalaninemia in 1969.
The Clinic has collaborated with the Screening Department to expand early diagnosis of rare inborn errors of metabolism in newborns in Poland, beyond phenylketonuria, and has made significant scientific and practical contributions to the development of methods for treating and monitoring genetically determined inborn errors of metabolism.
Furthermore, the Clinic has played a crucial role in advancing cystic fibrosis treatment, contributing to the establishment of the current Cystic Fibrosis Treatment Center in Dziekanów Leśny. Additionally, it has developed methods for preventing and treating various types of urinary tract stones in children.
