Pizhichil Treatment

Pizhichil is a revered therapeutic procedure rooted in the ancient healing system of Ayurveda. This treatment involves the gentle pouring of warm medicated oil over the body in a rhythmic manner. As the oil is evenly distributed and massaged into the skin, it aims to alleviate physical discomfort, enhance relaxation, and promote overall well-being.

About Pizhichil Treatment

Pizhichil stands as a cherished practice within Ayurveda, the ancient holistic system of medicine. This therapy entails the methodical drizzling of warmed herbal oil along the body, accompanied by a rhythmic and skillful massage. The process blends the curative qualities of specialized oils with the therapeutic touch of massage, striving to alleviate physical unease, instill deep relaxation, and cultivate a sense of comprehensive harmony.

Pizhichil is popularly known as “Thailadhara” and is one of the traditional favorites among Ayurvedic therapies. In ancient times, this therapy was considered a royal treatment and referred to as “the king of Ayurvedic therapies.”
Pizhichil means “to squeeze.” By combining oil and heat therapy, Pizhichil is used to enhance blood circulation and simultaneously release toxins from the body. It is one of the major parts of Panchakarma in Ayurveda.

Procedure of Pizhichil Treatment

Pizhichil is a soulful unification of two classic Ayurvedic treatments called “Snehana” and “Swedana.” Snehana is an oil massage and Swedana induces fomentation and sweat. Pizhichil is a body massage that lasts for 60-90 minutes and involves relaxing strokes primarily aimed at minimizing anxiety and stress.
Before the treatment begins, the herbal oil is heated to a relaxing temperature.

The entire treatment includes pouring continuous streams of lukewarm herbal oils (or ghee) over the body for a fixed duration. Concurrently, the body is massaged to induce sweat and release toxins.

Besides these, some of the medicated oils used in Pizhichil include dhanwndharam tailam, bala tailam, praphanjanabanam tailam, and sahacharadi tailam. Nearly three to four liters of the herbal oil is rhythmically applied to the body. The treatment is performed under the experienced hands of two to four Ayurvedic practitioners. After the Pizhichil massage, the patient proceeds to a warm water bath.

The above procedure is followed diligently and great results are observed after this treatment.
