Founded in 1906 by Dr. Magnin and Harry Anthony van Bergen, the American Hospital of Paris was established to provide medical care to the numerous American nationals residing in France, adhering to American practices and offering services in their mother tongue.
In 1913, it received federal status from the United States Congress, and in 1918, the French State acknowledged its services to France by granting it the status of a recognized establishment of public utility, allowing the hospital to receive donations and legacies.
